Background
I found my internship placement by contacting my kindergarten teacher who is now the Program Supervisor of Guidance K-12 for Cranston Public Schools. I contacted the Program Supervisor because I am curious to learn more about the role of a guidance counselor. I am interested in becoming a guidance counselor and felt that this internship would give be a better idea of whether or not it is the right field for me.
Professional Objectives
Objective 1: Learn the roles and responsibilities of a guidance counselor.
Activities/Resources:
· Talk to supervisor about her roles and responsibilities.
· Shadow my supervisor to see what her day entails.
· Shadow an elementary and high school guidance counselor.
· View different resources used by counselors.
Evidence:
· Include in my portfolio schedules of my days with the counselors.
· Include in my portfolio a list of roles and responsibilities of a guidance counselor.
Objective 2: Learn and understand the terminology and resources used by guidance counselors.
Activities/Resources:
· Observe guidance counselors and discuss terminology with guidance counselors.
· Read reports, articles and resources about guidance.
Evidence:
· Create a guide about terminology and different resources used.
Internship Details
Duties include:
· Shadow guidance counselor and sit in on “team” meetings.
· Read resources and paperwork used by guidance counselor.
· Shadow elementary and high school counselors and observe differences between age groups.
Evaluation Methods:
· Completion of university evaluation forms.
· Consistent communication with my supervisor.
Expected Work Schedule:
· Hours: 6hrs/week; Fridays 8am-2pm
· Dates: September 28 – December 7
