During my Fall 2012 semester I had the pleasure of being a guidance intern at Park View Middle School.  I worked closely with my supervisor in the middle school.  I was also able to shadow counselors at the elementary and high school levels.  I enjoyed my experiences as a guidance intern and I feel that it was a positive experience for me.

During my internship I was able to view the roles of guidance counselors at the elementary, middle and high school levels.  I was also able to observe the different roles and responsibilities of guidance counselors depending on the age group of their students.  Working with different guidance counselors provided me with the opportunity to see the necessary skills for working with elementary, middle, and high school students.

During my internship I really enjoyed sitting in on one-on-one meetings, teacher-parent-counselor conferences, and IEP meetings.  These experiences helped me to realize that I really enjoy the idea of working with a group to help students receive the help and assistance they need.  I learned how important it is for counselors, teachers, parents, and administration to all work together for the best interest of the student.

My experience as a guidance intern has helped me realize that this might be a career I really enjoy.  The internship has also made me consider exploring school psychology and school social work.  I learned that I definitely want to work in a helping profession and I will continue to work toward a career in helping.
